Ionian Islands

What to expect

Kefalonia offers a large, varied and very green island experience.

Expect dramatic beaches like Myrtos and Petani, limestone cliffs, caves, fir-covered mountains and calm turquoise bays. The island has multiple towns rather than one hub, so driving is essential.

Accommodation and dining range from simple to high-end but remain good value compared to the Cyclades.

The vibe is relaxed, scenic and spacious, with excellent swimming, strong local wine production and plenty of quiet places even in busier months.

Language: Greek, but most people in tourist areas speak English ( and more)

Currency: Euro

Money: You can find ATMs in most towns and villages. Many places will take card but in remote villages, and for things like buses, you will need cash.

Plugs: The plugs in Greece are Type C and F. The standard voltage is 230 V, and the standard frequency is 50Hz.

Best time to visit Kefalonia

How to get around Kefalonia

Like all the large Ionian Islands, we recommend hiring a car.

Which part of Kefalonia should I stay in?

Fiscardo for charm, Agia Efimia for central access, Lassi for convenience, Skala for beaches and big resorts.

What are the must see places on Kefalonia?

Myrtos Beach, Melissani Cave, Assos, Fiscardo, Petani Beach and Antisamos. A day trip to Ithaca is highly recommended too.

Do I need a car?

Yes. The island is large, and things are very spread out.

The bus system is good, but only stops at major towns and villages, not at beaches or other attractions.

Is Kefalonia expensive?

Things here are moderately priced. Moderate. It is much cheaper than islands like Santorini and Mykonos, with a wide range of mid-level options and budget options too.
